By contrast, the UK was the worst destination in luxury terms, and also scored poorly on housing, with only one-fifth of expatriates reporting that their standard of accommodation had improved since moving to Britain. Expats living in the UAE reported an average improvement in 10 out of 11 measures of luxury compared with their home country, including access to private healthcare, owning a pool and the ability to employ staff. While Spain had the third-highest average longevity, with 76% of respondents having been there for three or more years (the Netherlands was top and Germany second), it was 12th overall out of 14 in the table, scoring particularly poorly on earning and saving. Only France and the UK were rated worse destinations overall. Expats in Hong Kong enjoyed the highest salaries, with almost half earning more than £100,000 a year, though India was rated the best location for earning and saving, as the cost of living there is lower. HSBC Bank International surveyed 2,155 of its customers. |
